HUNGARY Visegrád

Visegrád is a small castle town located north of Budapest on the right bank of the Danube. Visegrád is famous for the remains of the Early Renaissance summer palace of King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary and the medieval citadel. In 1991, the leading politicians of Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Poland met here to form a periodical forum, the Visegrad group. Looking back to the past, we can find a connection with the event held in 1335. King Charles I of Hungary (Visegrád was his home town at that time) hosted at Visegrad a two-month congress with the Bohemian king, John of Luxemburg, and the Polish king, Casimir III. The aim of this conference was to create a peace between the three kingdoms and secure an alliance against Habsburg Austria.
